We have stayed here twice now and truly love it. The hotel is small (10 rooms), modern, and lovely. The grounds are well kept and the pool is a great place to spend the day. The hotel staff is great and accommodating. We travel often and like to stay in places that are mostly walkable and contemporary, so this is our perfect kind of hotel. Overall if you are up for walking this location is perfect, have yet to find one better, and the views from Hotel Donaire cannot be beaten! Location: The town is a short but steep walk away and the property is about 6 stories from parking to the top floor so it's a LOT of steps if anyone has mobility issues. The cathedral and plaza are about a 10-15 minute walk, as is the Malecon. Restaurants can be a little challenging to find on Sunday-Tu, but not impossible and the hotel restaurant is quite good. Wed. morning there's an outdoor market near Scallion's restaurant which is worth catching (15-20 minute walk) Excursions/taxis: A day trip to Mazamitla (Swiss Village) and/or Tlaqupaque (artist suburb of Guadalajara) are great options. We rented a car (because there were 6 of us), but in the future will hire drivers, it's cheaper often and easy in the area. A taxi from the airport to Hotel Donaire is only about $30. If you go to Chapala, you can skip the boat ride. The island isn't nice, there are a couple of restaurants but not fancy and $$$$. Instead, walk the Malecon and enjoy one of the many fabulous cafes in town. Dining: Be sure to visit el Charro for dinner (just off the plaza) and Casa Domenech brings in NYC-level jazz musicians. A few notes: The Hotel Donaire on-site restaurant had recently changed hands, the staff was all new and not well trained, so things took a really long time. This was in April, so hopefully, they have their bearings now. COVID testing available at the hospital (on main road) a few blocks from hotel was $45US and results in 15minutes.

Very comfortable room, delicious food, beautiful views. it is a decent hike from the town center to the hotel but very worth it! Would definitely stay again.
